A Midsummer Garden Dream

Español

It’s the beginning of March and I’m already dreaming about late spring and summer. In my mind I can smell the beautiful flowers I have in the garden and the gorgeous vegetables I grow in the little dirt patch I have way in the back of my backyard. I love gardening just as much as I love cooking, which is something I inherited from my mother. And just like learning how to cook, I’ve been teaching myself how to garden which up until a few years ago I didn’t know anything about.

In Colombia you can grow almost anything and harvest it pretty much most of the year, same goes for plants, everything is perennial and as long as you take care of it, it keeps growing. Here, I have had to learn all about annuals, perennials, full sun, partial sun, shade and don’t get me started about zones. On top of that, learning about pH soil levels has been a total challenge, especially for my hydrangeas and blueberry plants. However, I have managed to grow some things like three different kinds of tomato trees, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries and several herbs like cilantro, parsley, basil and mint. But I’ve also murdered a few plants as well, such as as the blueberry plant I was talking about, my zucchini plant that was extremely overcrowded and at least 8-10 different flowers, including a hydrangea bush which is my most favorite flower. To me, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a house surrounded by all kinds of hydrangea bushes of all different colors. Remember the movie “Something’s Gotta Give” with Diane Keaton? Well, I’ve seen that movie about 10 times just so that I can see the outside of the house which is framed by the most gorgeous blue hydrangeas.

Herbs: mint, basil, parsley. The snails ate my cilantro and the oregano never made it

But
then I come back to reality and realize that it is ONLY the beginning
of March, that summer is still far away and that this weekend we will
get buried by at least 10 inches of snow. Sigh.

  1. What a beautiful garden! I have a lot of trouble learning all the rules of gardening too. Luckily my husband understands most of it – I can't wait for warmer weather 🙂
